[The video opens on a shot of Jailbreak, standing in the Station's kitchen. For some reason, she's holding a slice of bread in one hand, and is standing by the toaster... which appears to have changed a little, somehow?]

[Overall it looks pretty much the same, but it has an extra slot in the front, and a little square screen on the side.]

So, I might've mentioned before that I can take things and make 'em a little more magical, right? Anyway, long story, but we were having some trouble with cooking and I did a little work on the toaster. Figured it'd be good manners to let everybody know how to work this thing, if we're all gonna be using the same kitchen. Other four slots work just like you're used to, no problem, but this fifth one here's kinda different.

[She drops the bread into the fifth slot and pulls the lever. A metal shutter comes down over the slot's opening, covering the contents from view, and the little screen lights up. In white letter it says 'processing...' and then, after a moment, changes to read 'yeast, flour, sugar, salt, carroway seeds'. The slot opens, and instead of bread out pops a set of five small metal trays.]

[Jail picks up on of the trays so the camera can get a good shot of it, revealing that it contains flour. Presumably, the other four contain the remaining listed ingredients.]

So yeah, it's like a bread maker, but in reverse. We have a bread unmaker now.

[Jail holds up the toaster, revealing that a label has been added by way of putting a piece of sticky tape on the side and scribbling 'bread unmaker' on it in marker. She looks pleased with herself.]

Why?

I was trying to find yeast so I could try out brewing. I didn't think she'd make THIS thing.

I'll accept...hmm...let's say 40% of the responsibility here.

Needed yeast, had magic technology powers and some bread, bread has yeast in it. Pretty straightforward, honestly.

[When all you have is a hammer...]

Look, the point is, you got yeast now. And we all got a bread unmaker. Everybody wins.

I did. And the brew isn't turning weird colors or whispering to me in my sleep or anything.

I'm still making you take the first drink but, this might actually have worked.

I didn't know that this mead will take five freaking months to ferment, though.

Pretty sure that's just... how long mead takes, though. Not 'cause of the way you got the yeast or anything.

[A beat, and then:]

Why the fuck would the beer talk to you? That just happen a lot in your world or something?

I guess that's one way to use up all the bread crowding the freezer. It seems like it would get a little tedious if you need a significant amount of one of the ingredients, though.

[She shrugs.]

Depends on how much bread you put in. Turns out you can shove in more than you'd think before it won't fit in the slot.

[Jail, why do you know this. What did you do to that poor toaster.]

Yeah, I know. I'm just impatient.

[A shrug.]

Beer shouldn't talk to you (unless you had too much of old man Chen's mushroom brew, but the abbot officially forbade any of us ever try that.), but if it's made from magic then who knows wwhat it'll do!

Oh, it can hold more than should fit in the space? That would make it easier. Does each slice still need to fit the dimensions of the slot?

... That is so cool.

[Like, holy shit.]

Not like a 'laws of physics are definitely broken here' amount, might just be a surprisingly roomy slot in there and bread is pretty squishy. Have to actually do some measuring to figure out if it's magic or not.

Does gotta be able to fit through the opening like normal, though.

Make a living back home doing shit like this. ...Well, not kitchen appliances so much, but y'know. Magitech in general.

[She'll try pretty much anything once. Including some things she probably shouldn't.]

Uh, I'd know? I'm only the one made the fucking thing, I wouldn't leave it in the goddamn kitchen if it was dangerous. Anyway the magic was on the toaster, not the stuff it makes- the bread ingredients get separated out by magic, but it doesn't make the ingredients magic.

That's awesome. What other kinds of stuff have you done, then?

[Her eyes are lit up with delighted curiosity and she might be leaning toward the camera a bit.]

I've only started seeing magitech since coming here, but everything I've seen here is amazing...

I mean...okay, I guess I get not having just straight up yeast here. Someone making their own bread without...wanting...bread-bread?

Hmm...I guess it would be more trouble than it's worth to find out. Either way, I feel a little better now about the ingredients that get wasted in failed baking attempts.

[Leaving mushroom brews aside for now...]

[She stops herself from saying "You can't trust sorcerers." Jailbreak IS a sorcerer of some kind, and would probably take that poorly.

And what has Jailbreak actually done to show herself as being untrustworthy? Sure, she has the look of someone who would steal your wallet, but...Actually trying to hurt people for no reason?

The more she thinks about it, the more she realizes she can't see it.]

...I guess that's fair.

[She looks mock-innocent.]

Obviously couldn't just let her struggle with that if I could help, right? Totally 'cause I'm just a helpful person that way and not because I wanted free alcohol or anything.

[Yeah, she's not even pretending to be honest here.]

[Jail honestly does like talking about this stuff, even if she has to be a little more sparing on the details to avoid incriminating some of her customers.]

That's sorta like asking an artist who works on commission what kind of stuff they've painted- it mostly depends on what the customer's looking for. Gotta admit, it ain't too common back home, so it's been cool to see it used a lot here.

[Mostly because here there isn't a corporation using their lobbyists to make it illegal for anyone else to sell magical goods.]

Just does the dry ingredients, though- you don't get the eggs or milk back, if you used any. ...Probably better that way. Less messy.

[Jail would not dispute the suggestion that she's untrustworthy- it's hard to be as shady as she is without actively trying- but would be surprised that it's her magic that makes her seem worrying instead of, say, her entire personality.]

[Whether she'd admit it or not, though, Bai Lin's got her pretty much on the money by thinking she's more likely to pickpocket someone than hurt innocent people for fun.]

[As it is, she's a little surprised by the sudden change of heart on the topic, but isn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. In the vague belief that understanding more about it might help Bai Lin feel more at ease, she offers:]

If it helps, think of it as... kinda like if you used an enchanted sword that was super sharp to cut through a wall- you used something magic to make the hole, but the hole isn't magic.

Most of my stuff's like that, doing magic but not causing magic. Making something into a magic artifact is already pretty hard, so making something that makes more magical stuff? Not the kinda thing I can afford to do often, I only got so much energy to throw around here.

You'd know better than I would...

[For what it's worth, she doesn't sound happy about the admission at all. In fact, she felt like she had to say a bit more.]

That's just...treating magic like it's a rational thing. And maybe it is where you came from. Where I came from, people who use magic are...unstable. Maybe magic makes them that way, maybe it's just that those who are a bit crazy are more suited to learning it. I don't know.

I just know that every time I've met a sorcerer, my life has gotten more complicated. Also there's a pretty strong pattern of me getting set on fire.

[She showed Jailbreak her hands, which had burns on the palms. She also pulled her shirt up just a bit so she could see the larger burn scar on her right hip.]

It makes me nervous, is all.
