This is probably a silly thing for me to be worrying about, but I thought I might as well ask anyway.

For the people who've been here for a while – or maybe not even here, just places like here, that aren't your home – what do you do about missing important days? Maybe things like holidays or birthdays. Just special occasions that mean a lot to you, but you can't exactly celebrate them while you're here.

If it's a birthday (for someone else, I mean) would it be strange to do something even if that person isn't here? Is it a bit selfish to do something on that day for yourself? I've never really thought about it before, but I haven't been able to get it out of my head the last few days.
