Just in case anyone from a version of Earth hasn't worked out how to convert the date here, it's getting close to Halloween. I wouldn't really know the first thing about organizing a costume party, but I did find a seasonal movie in the media room earlier.

[She holds her device slightly away to show a DVD case.]

If anyone's interested, maybe we could set it up in the theater this weekend and watch it together.

It's possible to learn all kinds of magic here. Plus, we're from varying levels of supernatural worlds originally. My own world has limited psychic powers, but no magic.

The movies do seem to be owned by the same company, so maybe he will have a cameo.

Well then, I must be the odd one out. Closest thing I had to actual magic was a stage magician who was convinced she was a real mage. The rest was tech, and then more tech.

[Not to diss on Himiko or magic in general.]

Guess we gotta keep an eye out for him then!

If it makes your world feel less boring, psychic powers aren't widely known in mine. The most I've seen in public view is the occasional apparently genuine fortune teller, and even they get buried by all the frauds.

That makes sense... I'm not jealous, I'm just trying to get used to things around here. It's a big leap from little-to-no magic to everything suddenly being magic.

I can understand that. It was pretty shocking when I first found out about psychic abilities. At least you have people here who know how this works, so you can get proper explanations.

For the most part, anyway. We're still trying to figure out how and why the Fissures form.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the word "Fissure" is "crack, like a hole in the sidewalk." I'm not an expert or anything, but if there's all this magic being thrown around, I think maybe the surplus of magic might have put too much force on the fabric of reality and cracked it open in some places?

IDK, it's a wild theory. Don't quote me on that.

It's entirely possible, though I think the ease of developing new abilities is a symptom rather than a cause. An entity that seems to be the source of magic in this world claims to have had a part of itself stolen.

My current theory is that wherever that piece is, it's leaking magical power into this world. Without direction or control, it damages stable reality and creates the effects we know as Fissures.

Yikes... So you're saying the guy who stole that part was trying to cause the fissures? Or maybe they wanted the power to themselves and the fissures are something they didn't expect?

Most likely the latter. If they were trying to cause the Fissures, they either didn't think they would be apocalyptic, or they were well and truly insane.

If the former, it would have most likely been with the intention of destabilizing rival countries, without realizing the results would spread across the entire planet.

A part of me wants to believe the guy was out of their mind. But that last point seems sort of reasonable...

But if someone was gonna do that, the folks from the rival countries would do the same to get back at them or something.

Assuming they knew how. Something like that doesn't sound as though it would be easy. Plus...at least some people must have been aware the source of magic was a sapient being.

Yeah... For all we know, these people had no idea what they were doing.

But at this point, all we have is speculation. The androids don't know who caused it, the surviving population is in stasis, and none of the nearby ghosts seem to know anything...among the ones that are even willing to talk.

Wonderful. Guess we have to dig deeper ourselves.

IDK about you, but all this speculation has me looking forward to the next Fissure.
