Just in case anyone from a version of Earth hasn't worked out how to convert the date here, it's getting close to Halloween. I wouldn't really know the first thing about organizing a costume party, but I did find a seasonal movie in the media room earlier.

[She holds her device slightly away to show a DVD case.]

If anyone's interested, maybe we could set it up in the theater this weekend and watch it together.

Do you ever know what to prepare for?

To some degree. The androids can warn us about the more obvious effects, like Incendia. But they typically don't go into the Fissures alone, since it can be dangerous and they aren't trained in self-defense.

Uh... that reminds me, if you know someone who does that kind of training, I'm in the market for some. All I got is a few hours' worth of gun practice in a simulation.

[Seeing as how his actual attempts at defending himself from murder failed miserably and thus he won't count it.]

Someone named Lin does regular martial arts lessons in the morning, so I'd suggest talking to her if you want to learn unarmed defense. I can teach marksmanship myself, if you're interested in pursuing that.

[He's making a mental note about Lin, but if someone is offering to teach personally he'll start with that.]

[It says something to him that he didn't say using a gun would typically be unnecessary, so he's wondering about the average threat level now. From that he's estimating that it's nothing he'd want to deal with in close quarters, he's just a gamer nerd whose body is not in particularly top form.]

Not frequently, most people here seem to lean toward magic or melee weapons for dealing with aggressive Fissure creatures or wildlife. I do have formal training in handling a gun, though, and they're quite useful against enemies you can't safely close with.

You do? [About the 'formal training', he's visibly surprised. Akechi is clearly younger than him, and she's a girl to boot, probably not expected to take any kind of compulsory military service when she gets older. Then again, formal could mean a lot of things, and there are also a lot of different kinds of worlds out there. It's not actually weirder than having wings. Still something he has to get over for a second, mostly because of the age thing.]

Well, as awesome as learning how to do magic or use a melee weapon sounds, I'm worried it's too hard... I at least got a little bit of practice with this kind. My last teacher was formally trained too, with the Detroit Police, hehe.

That's...American, right? I work for the Tokyo Police Department, back home. I was trained to use a handgun there, and I like to think I've gotten pretty good with one.

Yeah, though they were also from the future or something. [He pauses.] Maybe not futuristic compared to this place though....

[Well, hearing she works for a police department as well, he's just going to assume he was wrong about her age until proven otherwise. It sounds like a similar experience type at least.]

But in that case, maybe this could work out after all, if you're really willing to help me. Does Incendia have what we'd need for that too?

No, we would have to search areas were Fissures have been for something like that. Incendia doesn't seem to have anywhere that carried real weapons of any sort.

Aww, okay. Is that going to be a lot of trouble though?

[It'd be kind of counterproductive if they went somewhere dangerous to get the thing that would protect him from danger when most people do something else anyway.]

Not necessarily. The androids have exploration drones they sometimes let us borrow when we want to look for something. They're not much use for stabilizing Fissures, but they are rather good at bringing things back from them.
