Calling the Old Man Out
[Goro has barely been seen since getting back from the Fissure, only leaving his room briefly to eat a couple times a day, coffee in hand and looking half asleep. Now, though, he seems to finally be properly awake...at approximately 8PM.]
Good...erm, evening, I suppose. I’m sorry I’ve been so absent lately, that Fissure must have taken more out of me than I thought.
But, now that I’m recovered, there’s something important I need to tell everyone. The last batch of new arrivals included a man named Masayoshi Shido. He’s my father, and a truly despicable man, who has had numerous people killed for his own convenience or benefit. He even had my mother killed to cover up the scandal of my birth.
[Here he holds up a phone, showing a picture of Shido...with what looks like avocado and cheese smeared on his face and a shrimp up his nose, wearing the most tiredly Done expression as he reaches for the offending crustacean.]
I injured him in the forest in retaliation for the things he’s done to me, one of my boyfriends, and countless others, but don’t mistake him for someone who deserves your pity. He’s physically not much of a threat, but he is a skilled schemer and manipulator, and-
[ Which is the moment that the video will shake, and a very brief flash of a familiar face (spoiler: Akira’s) can be seen. Off-screen, he’s gently pressing a kiss to Goro’s cheek, whispering that he loves him. Don’t mind the view of a ceiling for a moment, guys - it’s a nice ceiling, at least?
… He’ll properly make it up to Goro, later, if he can? For now, though, he gently brushes the fingers of one hand through his boyfriend’s hair. Akira’s face can properly be seen, after he takes a quiet breath. He looks… well, how most would remember? Only with a bit more of a tiredness to it, maybe.
Though, that’s not taking away from how serious he looks as he speaks. ]
... and, while Goro is right about all of that, there is one more detail I feel should be taken into account. Shido isn’t a good person, but he’s well-aware of that now. He’s done unforgivable things, but his eyes were opened to all of it after his ass was kicked.
[ JUST SAYING… ]
Anyway, nobody has to worry about him. Besides, he knows if he tried anything, he’d have to answer to all of us from his world, and then some.
[ JUST SAYING... ]
[This is the point where Goro takes his tablet back, looking a bit huffy.]
It’s true, he isn’t likely to be a threat now. But he absolutely doesn’t deserve anyone’s kindness or sympathy.

Think it was a little easier when I thought humans were always gonna be the worst thing out there. When someone decides to do stuff like that to your people, having to think that an actual person just decided that it was okay for that to happen feels creepier than thinking they're all just like that.
[A slight chuckle, rueful but not bitter as it could be.]
Guess I can't back down from a challenge, though- I've never given up just because something's hard.

[ It's said without hesitation once she's done speaking. And then he's quiet for a moment... ]
Is it okay to ask what they did? [ although-- ] Not right this second, of course.

The short version? Humans and monsters used to live together on the Surface, in peace. Humans were physically tougher, but monsters had way more magic, so they were equal. Then one day somebody found out that you could absorb a soul from the other species- human taking a monster soul or monster taking a human one- and gain great power.
And human souls were easier to take, because being more physical meant they all stuck around a while after dying but almost all monster souls vanished right after death.
[Now her tone gets more bitter, going over an unfairness that's lingered since long before she was ever even born.]
Nobody had even taken a soul, nobody even tried to, but the humans were so scared that it might happen that they declared war instead of taking the risk. They tried to wipe us all out, just in case we might be a threat. Monsterkind fought back... and lost.
In the end, the few survivors were herded into a series of underground caverns, beneath a mountain, and sealed in there by a magical barrier. To pass through the Barrier at all, you need the power of one human soul and one monster soul- and you need a full seven human souls to break it completely.
[She sighs wearily, remembering the next part of this story and suddenly feeling exhausted on a soul-deep level.]
And that's where the Kingdom of Monsters has been, stuck down there growing and surviving and struggling to get by, for the last couple thousand years. People used to think we might be able to get out peacefully, but that... didn't end well. Seems like humans didn't want to try making peace, and our king's children paid the price for it.
[She doesn't elaborate further- even for this story, the details of that part are pretty grim.]
So these days? Any human falls down through the Barrier, their soul is forfeit. It's been a few hundred years since the last one to come down, and we still aren't free yet.
[That... whatever they were that she'd been fighting aside. She's pretty sure they weren't human, even if they looked a little like one.]

Forfeit?
[ After taking a moment to hold a blink and shake his head, he sighs. ]
So, you're all doing what you can just to survive...
[ It. Really... pisses him off that they have to live that way. What the fuck, that humanity. ]

[Her tone is flat, though not cruel. She's not as thrilled about killing humans as her bluster might imply, but she doesn't have the energy to sugarcoat it. Sometimes you just have to be blunt about things.]
Yeah. We were trying.

[ It's not aggressively asked, but this sure is the tone of someone who has a Thing against mindless slaughter. ]
Were...
[ Ahaha... this... whole story is...
Fuck. ]

[She breaks off, voice suddenly dying at the memory of the last time she'd spoken to the Royal Scientist. In a mumble, she finishes the sentence:]
You'd have to ask Dr. Alphys.
[Damn, he noticed the past tense there. Some part of her struggles with saying anything more, but she's told him this much already and she was never much for lying, might as well go for the truth.]
Someone came down who looked human, but... I'm not sure they were. They definitely weren't a monster, either. They killed anyone they could find. I was fighting them right before I came here.
I don't think I won.
I THOUGHT I REPLIED TO THIS........
Akira can't hide the way his expression falters a little, and he has to avert his gaze. Saying he's sorry just wouldn't cut it. ]
Shit...
[ He... honestly doesn't know what to say to this. What can he possibly say to this... ]
no subject
Yeah. That about covers it.

[ It's short and sweet - said with a sort of firmness, even as he tries to add something... maybe reassuring to it. Possibly a reminder, of some sort, even if she doesn't actively (or believe she) need(s) it...? ]

[She shakes her head, and disconnects the line. That's enough heavy stuff for one day, she needs to go do something else right now before she explodes.]

[ There's something awkwardly hesitant for a moment before he nods - tell her what you told yourself in the last week of the mall... ]
