video, slightly forward-dated; un: Jetshard

[The post goes up about eight PM on the 29th, and it's clearly filmed from the otherwise quiet medbay. Jetshard's in front of one of the dividing screens for a kind of neutral backdrop, and apparently has her tablet propped up against something to film - as the video stream starts, she's still fiddling with the angle a little.]

Hey, everyone. I know some of the new folks won't have met me yet. I'm Sawbones Jetshard, and I'm the nocturnal contingent of the station's medical team. I'm posting in that capacity tonight, and I'd like to thank you for a few minutes of your attention.

I know that most of you are of species that are relatively tolerant of light and heat, but I'm also aware that there are several people around who will find a way to overexert themselves if possible. And the weather's been warming dramatically over the last few days, so this seems like as good a time as ever to review the major symptoms of heat and dehydration-related illnesses.

- that is, I'm specifically citing the symptoms in humans. If you have some of the symptoms but not all of them it's still cause for concern. They're similar in trolls, but unless I've seriously missed something I'm the only troll here. If you're not human, this is likely still useful for you, but be aware of your own body and reactions and don't be afraid to reach out for help if you feel unwell, even if it's not in these specific ways.

And I don't think the sun here is intense enough to cause rapid damage to anyone, but it radiates enough in the ultraviolet range for long-term exposure to potentially cause burns. Be aware of how much sun exposure you're getting, especially if you're dressing down and showing more skin than you usually do.

Alright? Alright.

Dehydration can sneak up on you easily, especially in warm weather. Make sure you're getting enough to drink. I'm not going to lean too heavily on "if you're thirsty you're getting dehydrated" but seriously, that's not a bad guideline. More severe symptoms include headache, low energy, and lower output of secretions like saliva, tears, and urine. If you can keep something to drink with you, that's smart. Staying hydrated won't prevent heat illness if you're otherwise stupid enough, but it'll certainly help.

Heat exhaustion is the milder form of heat illness, and when I say milder I mean you're probably not actively dying but it's still something you need to take seriously. Symptoms can include excessive sweating, headache or dizzyness, cold, clammy skin, muscle cramps, a weak but rapid pulse, and nausea or vomiting. If you start feeling this way, move to a cooler place as soon as possible, get something to drink, and rest. If you want to take a cold shower or apply cold compresses, that can also help.

The more extreme version is heat stroke. If you, or someone you're with, stops sweating, becomes warmer than usual to the touch and visibly flushed, or begins to lose consciousness, you need to move the victim to a cooler place and seek medical help immediately.

Please do not take chances with your health, especially if the climate here is warmer than you are accustomed to! The fissure missions provide plenty of embarassing ways to potentially get yourselves in trouble, you don't need to go looking for more.

Alright, thanks folks.

I haven't noticed anything too out of the ordinary.

[ HI THERE, your resident princess from a tropical-ass volcanic hell island is here. ]

Oh. I suppose there have been some changes, but... It's still quite pleasant.

I'm just glad it's not nearly as humid as what I'm used to.

I suppose; it's been a bit cooler than I'm used to.

I never really noticed until I was spirited away off to this station.
dragonmouth: Everyone had great face structures. (The shrooms were awesome.)

There's some snow atop the mountain peaks back home, but...no. I'm not.

[Yeah, guess who's already not too inclined to go out during the day?]

Since I'm sure there are people who don't know yet, one of my powers is to create drinks from nothing. I can create three ordinary servings every twenty minutes, so I'll be doing my best to keep the refrigerator stocked. If you feel dehydrated on a mission, though, please feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to come help.

[Unless you're a certain someone, but that should go without saying.]

[It still feels weird to have casual acquaintances call him by his given name, but...he'll let it slide. Especially since he's feeling a bit on edge, after having let his ugly side slip out the other day.]

I'm happy to be of help. I'll keep my drink offers aimed more toward the kinds of things I'd bring with me for a long bike ride.
foolishjustice: (My mistake.)

[And he's trying to ease up on the formality, anyway.]

You make it sound as though coffee is all I make.
foolishjustice: (May I help you?)

I can make things to request, you know. If you need less sweetened drinks, that is something I can manage.

The sun here sounds quite brutal, then, doesn't it? Trying to burn people, and all of that.

Your sun...what is it like, if I might ask?

Thank you, Dame Sawbones. I know not everyone is accustomed to climates that vary greatly with the seasons, so I'm certain this will be helpful.

...perhaps it would be wise to conduct checks of the area on occasion, just in case.

I see.

I don't go outside much, so I don't have experience with this.

Are there any other sicknesses that are important to know about?
press_start: (pointing nami)

just in case, how okay are you with major Dangan Ronpa 2 spoilers?

[personal profile] press_start 2018-05-20 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

[very much so, thanks to spoilers.]

I haven't had any previous problems, though.

What’s your species like, Jetshard-san?
