I know one can be furious with someone they care about and yet not detest them. Difficult, but not unthinkable. But is it possible to ever learn to stop hating someone, when that anger is justified yet supposedly built on the foundation of a misunderstanding?

I've never been much for obligation. It's more an issue of deciding if that should be something I actually want.

It's hard to articulate, let me try from another angle

I would like to stop hating them. But I worry that I can not, both because they might expect forgiveness to follow and because I've hated them for so long that I don't know what the alternative would bring next.

if they don't respect that, that's on them.

Perhaps it is. But not everyone understands forgiveness and a lack of hatred are two different things.
